China was one of the great world powers of the 20th century, but not the most powerful. Both before and after the end of the Chinese Civil War, the People's Liberation Army was primarily an infantry force consisting of millions of trained soldiers. The QBZ-95-1 is a bullpup rifle, meaning that the action and magazine are both behind the trigger group. This creates a powerful weapon: while the gun is just under 30 centimeters long, it has a 20-inch-long barrel, similar to the M16A4 assault rifle. It is 5.5 inches longer than the M4A1 carbine and should be good for some added range over the American infantry carbine.
The QBZ-95-1 uses a short-stroke, gas-piston design used in firearms such as the M1 Garand and AK-47. In this regard, the Chinese infantry rifle still retains the Soviet legacy. Its rate of fire is 650 rounds per minute. The weapon uses a metal sight mounted on a support that moves over the receiver. While some rifles have been seen with sights built into the carry handle, the already high height of the mounting hole makes the additional sight attachment less than ideal.
Unlike US, NATO, and Russian rifles, which use 5.56 or 5.45mm cartridges, the Chinese weapon uses the domestically produced 5.8x42 cartridge. It is not known why China decided to develop the new model, although it may have been for security reasons. The 5.8mm round provides improved ballistic performance over the US Army's 5.56mm M855 round when fired from the M4A1 carbine. This may be a function of the slightly larger barrel being pushed with more fuel from the longer (20-inch vs. 14.5-inch) barrel.
The QBZ-95-1 is a fired bayonet and together with six WY-91 hand grenades form the fire of the average PLA soldier. Each of the nine man PLA squads has two fire teams, with one grenade per fire team. The grenade launcher QBZ-95-1, equipped with a 35mm under grenade launcher, is similar in concept to the US Army's long service M203 grenade launcher. The grenade also has fifteen grenade launchers. The heavy QBB-95 light support rifle has a bipod fire and a 75-round magazine.
