Guns are reactive tools. They are worn on the person to respond to a threat. They can be kept at home ready to respond to a threat indoors. If we have one caveat, most of the time it's best to install a shotgun or shotgun.

The pistol, therefore, is a weapon of opportunity. While guns aren't the most powerful firearms, they are the ones most likely to be on hand when a firearm is needed to save our lives. I spent several months evaluating the Judge Bull and formed a favorable opinion of the special purpose revolver.

The Taurus Judge Story

The Judge is a 5 shot revolver that also holds either the .410 caliber rifle cartridge or the .45 Colt cartridge. This means real variety. Likewise, the design limits the revolver's accuracy and range. As a pure short-range home defender, Judge Bick has merits.

There is a considerable argument that getting to your target quickly and getting a hit – any hit – very quickly is critical. This is true. I've learned that it's better to slow down and get a cross than to miss quickly. That's not to say that a quick attack isn't possible; it just takes practice.

The referee responds to this need by offering a shooting load. The .410 bore is not a powerhouse, but with the right load, and this is key, it offers a solid defensive option. Surprisingly, my evaluation shows that Judge Bick may also be viable for predator protection at close range. My test is perhaps the most common judge (there are several options), a steel frame revolver with a 3.0-inch barrel.

The revolver is fairly light, handles better than its ungainly appearance suggests, and offers a good shot chance for those practicing. The fit, finish and smoothness of the action are good. The revolver has a red fiber optic front sight. This sight provides a good aiming point and helps in acquiring the target quickly.

A shortbore shotgun that fires a shell casing is illegal, the .410 and .45 Colt are close enough for Taurus to design and manufacture a revolver chambered for both the .410 rifle cartridge and the .45 cartridge Colt. There are guns, but it's pretty superficial.

Like all double-action revolvers, the Judge is simple to operate. Open the cylinder, load the chambers and pull the trigger to fire. There is no slide on the rack and no safety to operate. The concept is to allow the shooter to get a quick hit with a shot load. Although each individual spear pellet does not carry much energy, the instantaneous shock load effect of several bullets offers excellent wounding potential.

You may have seen ill-conceived videos and stunts where the bull referee is hit on target and the target is full of shots. Birdshot is a small shot grade intended to humanely kill a bird with just a few shots. It is in no way useful for self-defense. Like shooting a full-sized rifle, birdshot is good for practice, but not for self-defense. A 7 to 9-round shot load carries hundreds of small pellets that form a pattern.

In the typical self-defense range, this model is between 18 and 32 inches. That's 7 yards, plus the bird shot is useless. Worse still, the pellet only penetrates a few inches. A criminal wearing a heavy winter jacket may not be injured at all. At about 15 feet, Federal cargo of 4, carries No. 3, has a cohesive pattern of less than three inches. This is the preferred load for those using the .410 load for self defense.

The Federal load is advertised at around 750fps, but actually tops out at 800fps in the Judge. Total payload is 292 grains. Winchester offers a PDX load with a total payload of over 300 grains, with three flat discs and a BB Shot load. With this load, the pattern is often quite large (up to 16 inches by 15 feet) with the pucks hitting the bull's eye.

The Hornady .410 Defense load features a .41 caliber bullet followed by two round balls. The mouse generally goes straight to the target with the balls radiating around the center. You need to plot the target shot on paper to determine how the shot spreads from 5 to 10 yards.

In my opinion, 7 yards is the maximum range for these loads, although the Hornady slug with its FTX design can be useful a little further out. Ultimately, buckshot and specialty loads are useful for home defense and short-range predator defense. Penetration tests in water jugs and wet newsprint show these loads will create a serious wound.

Pellets can penetrate a six inch jug and some shot will reach the second jug, but very little. The 2 1/2-inch Federal shell with 4OO pellets penetrates over 24 inches, which may correlate to 18 inches in gelatin. This is excellent.

The Winchester PDX load exhibits a much larger pattern. However, the three units in PDX offer a 3x4 pattern at 15 feet. The much larger model consists of 12 BBs. A Hornady FTH bullet penetrates 15 inches from this revolver, with the two shots forming a total group of 3 to 5 inches at 15 feet.

These heavy loads should produce devastating results from 15 feet to perhaps 21 feet, a magical average range of 7 feet. In truth, in a room or bedroom it is more likely. The referee needs to be on target, but the pattern has expanded enough to help hit 10 to 15 feet. This gun is not serviceable from 21 feet with shot loads.

Another option is to load the magazine with .45 Colt ammunition. In order to comply with federal handgun and ammunition law, the judge is a .45 Colt revolver capable of firing .410 rounds. The barrel is a shotgun. The .45 Colt bullet's distance jump from the chamber to the throat of the barrel appears to limit both velocity and accuracy. In some cases this is true. However, my latest tests show that this leak isn't always what we think it might be.

The Judge is very strong for heavier loads, including hard fusion SWC hand bullets. Depends on how much recoil tolerance you have. A good choice for self defense is Hornady's Critical Defense. This 185 grain bullet has a good reputation for expansion and penetration. Velocity is 891 fps from the three-inch Taurus Judge barrel. Disgust is modest. This payload hits the target point. At 15 yards, five hits from a tight bench shooting position yielded a 3-inch pack. This is very true for self defense.

Another choice to consider is the Winchester PDX 225-grain JHP. This loadout packs a heavy punch at 780fps. This bullet weight offers plenty of momentum. The .45 Colt is among the few handguns that perform well without expanding bullets. He has proven himself in the Old West and in many engagements since.

A solid choice is the 255-grain Winchester lead bullet. This bullet comes out at 770 fps by the judge. (And 778 fps from a handy 4 ¾-inch revolver for comparison.) Penetration is about 18 inches, ideal for self-defense, but recoil is mild. This is also a relatively accurate load with a 3-inch group and 15 yards. If the Judge owner anticipates a long shot, the .45 Colt offers proven wound potential without much recoil.

The Judge is a specialized weapon. It's not a gun that can go anywhere, do anything any way. But what it does, it does well. It's worth taking the time to explore Judge.pledges to make buying guns easier, support local gun shops, and serve our customers to the best of our ability.

A scaled-down version of the Judge, this Judge Bull Public Defender is a five-shot revolver capable of firing 45 LC and 410 rounds. Like its big brother, the Judge Public Defender comes standard with a padded rubber grip, fiber-optic front sight, and Taurus key-operated safety, but this revolver is small enough to fit in your pocket while meeting your close self - defense needs. Improved hammer provides smooth and smooth pulling. The shallow fire of the barrel means that the Judge Advocate General is not a short barrel shotgun under the NFA, although there are restrictions in some states with stricter gun laws.
