Used Glock 9mm - This week I'm hanging out in Detroit which I try not to do very often, but when I'm there I always go to the local gun shop. In its heyday, it was a general store that might have looked more like a home in a third world country than an inner city. The attendant coaxed me which is usually a great sign, once I got the buzz I started looking for the perfect used gun.
They have a few select 5906 Smiths for sale from older revolvers. The deal that caught my eye was a Glock 22 that had been beaten up with old skateboard tape. While picking it up, I noticed it replaced the Gen 3 Glock 22 .40 S&W barrel with a 9mm conversion barrel. The Storm Lake replacement barrel shows very little firing and most of the interior looks like new and barely used.

I started talking to the guy behind the counter about where this Glock 22 was from. Apparently, it was from a department in Metro Detroit that bought new barrels for their old Glock 22s. This is an attempt to save money on firearms in their budget. I was a bit surprised by this, but after thinking more about Detroit's financial situation, talking to the storekeeper about it, it makes sense.

The Glock comes with tritium night sights and that's basically it. There is no box, magazine, or manual of any kind with the gun. I basically picked up an empty Glock 22 and trigger lock for $145. At that price, it's still a steal even if nothing else comes along. After waiting for the gun shop to fix all their paperwork, I finally bought the gun. I can't wait to get home and test the gun again. I decided to take apart the Glock 22 on my bench to see the internals. For the most part, the slide and frame look like they might have fired 500 rounds.
The 9mm barrel looks essentially new compared to the rest of the components. There is some wear on the top of the sliding lid where it locks. The grip on the frame looked like it dragged five or six city blocks. There is a fair amount of case wear but nothing major. I grabbed some magazines and decided to see how this $145 Glock actually shoots.
I was very surprised that it worked so well and I had zero errors with the conversion barrel. At the end of the day, I put 250 rounds through it as a functional test. The only thing that doesn't work on the gun is the tritium night vision. After checking it in a dark room, the tritium is worn out and I may have to change the sights to find new tritium. It's not a big deal at all but it's something worth mentioning.
In the grand scheme of things, I am very happy with my Glock 22 with the 9mm conversion barrel. The gun is like any other Glock I've shot but a fraction of the price. I don't plan on making any changes to it now and just want to keep it stock. I think the story of a gun with a conversion barrel is too cool to mess with and I can adapt when I have another Glock. For the price, I wouldn't buy the Storm Lake barrel that comes with it.
