A private company, Silicon Ranch Corp., will finance, build, own, operate and maintain the solar production facility, which will be built on a 38-hectare site at NAS Meridian. The company will install 51,000 solar panels on land, which it leases from the Secretary of the Navy. It is expected to be capable of producing electricity up to 6 megawatts. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2018.
Nas Briefly Closes Main Gate After 'incident'
"Partnerships like the Department of the Navy, TVA, EMEPA and Silicon Ranch make us stronger and better equipped to accomplish our mission," said Admiral Scott Bunnay, commanding officer of NAS Meridian. "NAS Meridian's success in effectively managing its energy resources has been recognized at the highest levels of the Navy, and efforts, such as the Solar Project, to diversify energy sources help make the base more resilient and safe".
According to information from the Nay Undersecretary for Energy, Installations and the Environment, the facility will supply energy to the grid for consumption by TVA and EMEPA customers, including NAS Meridian. In exchange for basic land use for solar installations, NAS Meridian will receive special consideration in the form of electrical infrastructure upgrades, microgrid controls, and access to on-site solar power generation during fires, increasing energy resiliency . and basic security.
"The solar installation at NAS Meridian is a great example of how renewable energy sources can provide clean local generation as a fully integrated part of a larger electrical system," said Steve Noe, TVA's manager of renewable energy.
"EMEPA has been a partner with NAS Meridian for nearly 59 years and we continue to support their efforts to enhance their capabilities," said Randy Carroll, CEO of TVA. "This, in turn, helps our community grow."

"The MS Public Utilities Commission is proud to be a part of today's ribbon cutting for this important project," said Mississippi Public Utilities Commissioner Cecil Brown. "We applaud the Navy for leading the way in making renewable energy a reality to power our military."
